What we’ve learned is that the problem isn’t just that our current arena is about 50 years old—it’s that the arena was constructed in such a way that you simply can’t expand it. We lose concerts, for example, to Sioux City because their arena can seat 10,000 people and ours can’t. And unfortunately, there isn’t a good way to simply add those seats on to our existing building.
The fan experience for people in Sioux Falls could also be a lot better. Sightlines, especially for hockey, aren’t very good at our current arena. We could also use updated concession areas and it would be great to be able to offer suites and other specialty seating for our guests (it also helps a building be more profitable).
The bottom line is, events and entertainment are bypassing Sioux Falls because other cities have facilities that are more appealing than ours. That’s not good for our local economy, because our own residents are being forced to travel to other cities for entertainment and we aren’t bringing in as many visitors as we potentially could.
Our recommendation allows for maximum flexibilty in how we use a new events center along with our existing Arena and Convention Center. Together, these buildings will provide enough space for all of our current events and allow us to go after exciting new ones to bring in business for our city. Please take the time to learn more about our proposal!
